The
HCTC held a public meeting in a packed Victoria Hall, Harrow on Monday
evening.
A
capacity audience heard the committee recounting how the campaign came
into being, details of meetings with the Council and one MP, and possible
future developments. (Apparently the other MP suddenly decided to return
calls only today).
Supporters
then endorsed the actions of the committee and voted with a unanimous show
of hands for the spokesman, chairman, treasurer and other committee
members to keep up the good work in representing their views.
Charlie
Harris, Editor of the Harrow Times (which sponsored the meeting by paying
for the hall hire) then said a few words in support of the campaign,
lending it his paper's continued support, to the appreciation of all those
present.
During
an interval a collection was made to start the fighting fund needed to
continue the campaign. The committee itself has hitherto paid for all
expenses.
The
microphone was then handed to the floor, where a seemingly endless stream
of concerned and angry Harrow residents eagerly bore witness to the
inefficiency of the Council or its impenetrable accounting practices.
Unfortunately
there just wasn't the time available for everyone to have their say, but
the mood of the hall was clearly united - enough was enough and the
Council had better start acting according to the wishes of the residents.
The
meeting concluded those present were clearly eager to make an impact;
those who hadn't already cancelled their Council Tax direct debit in
favour of a cheque payment were urged to do so. Supplies of petition forms
and posters were collected and everyone dispersed in fighting mood.
