Council Tax Vote27th Feb 2004 (00:30) The amended Labour budget was passed tonight. The Liberal Democrats abstained and Labour's budget won thanks to the casting vote of ex-Tory councillor Gordon Williams. Immediately he had stated his voting intentions there were calls for his resignation made by members of the public, who had turned up in unprecedented numbers to watch the debate. There was also a large demonstration present outside the civic centre before the session. What the budget means for Harrow residents is unclear at this stage, but thanks to pressure from the HCTC the tax increase has been substantially reduced from Labour's original proposals for this year. Unfortunately Labour's plans are for much larger rises next year, which was not the case with the Conservative proposal. A full report will be posted as soon as full information is available. |
